April is Heartworm Awareness Month!

What are heartworms?  According to the Animal Rescue Professional Association, they are foot-long worms that infest the heart, blood vessels and lungs.  They can cause severe damage to major organ systems, including lung disease and heart failure.

How do dogs get heartworms? Heartworms are transmitted as larve from mammal to mammal via mosquitos, which makes them more prevalent in warmer weather and climates.

How long can heartworms live in my dog? Heartworms can live in dogs from 5 to 7 days.

What signs should I look for?  If your dog has heartworms, they could have a loss of appetite, exhibit coughing, fatigue and even weight loss.

If your dog shows signs of heartworms, it's always best to contact your vet.
